Flexible Bi-modal Control Modes for Hands-Free Operation of a Wheelchair by Head Movements and Facial Expressions

چکیده
Many kinds of head movements and facial expressions based human machine interfaces (HMIs) have been developed for hands-free control of electricpowered wheelchairs in order to assist disabled and elderly people. Most of these HMIs have a fixed configuration and do not allow users to choose a configuration suitable to their needs. It becomes necessary to provide users with different control modes and flexible configurations. This chapter presents five flexible bi-modal modes for hands-free control of a wheelchair that allow users to choose the most comfortable facial expressions and head movements. An Emotiv sensor is deployed to collect facial expressions and head movements for the bi-modal control modes. Two healthy subjects have participated in experiments, and have chosen their best configurations of the modes for controlling the wheelchair. Experimental results show that bi-modal control modes are flexible and allow users to select their preferred configurations for controlling the wheelchair reliably.

A Flexible Bio-Signal Based HMI for Hands-Free Control of an Electric Powered Wheelchair
This paper presents a bio-signal based human machine interface (HMI) for hands-free control of an electric powered wheelchair. In this novel HMI, an Emotive EPOC sensor is deployed to detect facial expressions and head movements of users, which are then recognized and converted to four uni-modal control modes and two bi-modal control modes to operate the wheelchair. Nine facial expressions and ...
متن کاملHead movement and facial expression-based human-machine interface for controlling an intelligent wheelchair
This paper presents a human machine interface (HMI) for hands-free control of an electric powered wheelchair (EPW) based on head movements and facial expressions detected by using the gyroscope and ‘cognitiv suite’ of an Emotiv EPOC device, respectively. The proposed HMI provides two control modes: 1) control mode 1 uses four head movements to display in its graphical user interface the control...

How far we think about the people who are handicap by birth, old age people and some accidental cases. All the wheelchairs in the market till market till now are not useful for the people whose limbs are not working. They are not involved in the national progress and not only this they are burden for others. The people who have his kind of disability are not able to perform their everyday actio...
متن کاملRobust Bio-Signal Based Control of an Intelligent Wheelchair
In this paper, an adaptive human-machine interaction (HMI) method that is based on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals is proposed for the hands-free control of an intelligent wheelchair. sEMG signals generated by the facial movements are obtained by a convenient dry electrodes sensing device. After the signals features are extracted from the autoregressive model, control data samples are u...

This paper presents a novel human machine interface for people with severe disabilities to control an electric powered wheelchair using face movements. Five face movements including jaw clenching and eye closing movements are identified by extracting movement features from both forehead Electromyography (EMG) signal and facial image information. A real-world indoor environment is setup for eval...
